UPCOMING TRIPS
Be a Part of the Legacy!
Outdoor enthusiasts are essential for the preservation and maintenance of the historic hiking trails in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Our volunteer-led organization facilitates these efforts by providing safety training, hand tools, gear lists, and experienced leaders who guide each crew from a pre-trip orientation to a safe return home.
Spring Wilderness Trail Clearing Trips Are Open!
We’ve got 10 volunteer trips available this spring in the Boundary Waters—and there’s something for every experience level. Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned trail warrior, we’ve got a spot for you.
Trips available from beginner-friendly to advanced, including work on:
- Powwow Trail
- Sioux Hustler Trail
- Brule Lake Trail
Help keep wilderness hiking and backpacking trails accessible while giving back to a place we all love.
Embrace the Adventure, Expect the Unexpected
We travel in the wilderness - flexibility and tolerance for unknown conditions and weather is part of the adventure.
Routes may be revised closer to the departure date as new information becomes available.
You should be in good physical shape for carrying your own gear and working a full day.

Upcoming Trips
BWAC offers a variety of trips to choose from. Volunteers will go on a day, weekend, or multi-day adventure. Overnight trips take place at USFS campgrounds, backpacking, canoeing, or a combo trip on the Powwow, Sioux-Hustler, and Brule Lake Trails.
CABIN & DAY TRIPS
Cabin trips are a great introduction to trail clearing - especially if you’re not looking to sleep in a tent or haul gear. Day trips are spent clearing the entrance to the trail.
CAR CAMPING TRIPS
Car camping trips are another great introduction to trail clearing - especially if don’t have backpacking gear or don’t want to carry in your gear. Overnight camping is at USFS campgrounds or near the trailhead. These trips are spent clearing trail in the gateway areas of the trails.
CANOEING TRIPS
All canoe trips have a combination of canoeing and hiking to your work site. Some are primarily canoeing while others involve long hikes after the paddle. Find the best fit for you through the trip descriptions.
BACKPACKING TRIPS
Backpacking trips range from short hikes to long treks - there are options for all levels of backpackers. Find the best fit for you through the trip descriptions.
