Snowshoe the Knife River Loop

  • Boundary Waters Advisory Committee 309 Cedar Avenue Minneapolis, MN, 55454 United States (map)

Join us for an afternoon of adventure close to Duluth. The Knife River loop is about 5.7 miles long. A spur of the trail comes to a scenic overlook of Lake Superior. Depending on conditions we might snowshoe part of the trail on the frozen Knife River itself. The terrain is a mix of rising slopes with level hiking most of the time. Just a few weeks ago we spotted a porcupine in the trees on the trail.

Please consume lunch prior to arrival. Bring snacks, 2 quarts of water, tea, cocoa etc., sunglasses, TP, whistle, compass, and a headlamp.

Weather: Current forecast is for highs at 28 degrees and cooler later in the afternoon. The key word for clothing is to wear layers, bring extra layer for stops, wind breaker, hat, neck warmer, mittens, and just in case, hand warmers. Sorel boots or insulated winter boots are a must. You will also need snowshoes, 20 to 25 inches long with a binding you have learned to trust. Be prepared for physical exertion on parts of the trail where snow has not been broken. You will get a break as we rotate the lead person to share the load.

As on any outdoor event, we will have a short "safety talk" before the hike, emphasizing the group staying together, hydrating, and taking thermal breaks to adjust clothing when needed. Small print: This hike is alcohol, tobacco, drug and pet free. Please put your phone in airplane mode during the hike to enjoy the forest. The organizer has the right to refuse participation to anyone for any reason (i.e. inadequate gear). This adventure may last longer than planned, so if you have later commitments, chose another activity as we expect all participants to complete the hike together.
